The AB2 Memorial Scholarship Fund

Our community of southeast Texas was stunned and saddened when Alicia Bonura and Ashley Brown, members of the West Brook High School Girl’s Soccer Team, lost their lives in a bus accident on their way to an out of town game.  Other members of the team were severely injured, and all of the girls will live the rest of their lives remembering that afternoon in March of 2006 and realizing how it would change their future.  The Soccer Booster Club with support from administration, faculty and students from the school and from this community and beyond, rallied to memorialize Ashley and Alicia and to support and honor the rest of the team by establishing a special fund.  The fund is called the AB Squared Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Foundation for Southeast Texas. Proceeds from a yearly golf tournament, sponsored by the West Brook Soccer High School Soccer Booster Club, helped build the fund.  Initial donors included the West Brook Soccer Booster Club, sponsors and participants of the Golf Tournament and many more.

The scholarship fund has provided a $1000 scholarship to each of the team members who were on the bus and who attended an accredited college or university.  Since those scholarships have all been awarded, criteria of future awards established by a committee working with the Foundation have gone in to effect.  Consideration for the future girls or boys soccer team member scholarships are based on need, academic standing, community service, extra-curricular activities and guidelines from the Foundation.  The scholarship committee is composed of soccer coaches, a school administrator, president of the West Brook Soccer Booster Club and three people from the community.  The Foundation for Southeast Texas administers the investment of the scholarship fund, the accounting to the Internal Revenue and makes the gifts to colleges and universities upon verification of enrollment of the scholarship recipients.

The founders of the scholarship fund have the ultimate goal of endowing the fund and keeping the memory of Alicia and Ashley alive forever.
